      Retirement

A player's College/University years can be four of the most exciting years of their life. Then, almost without warning, it's over. We, as players, are then left with the startling realization that the world is waiting for us and our entry. Let's face it. For most of us, this reality can be pretty scary.
At this point in a player's development, he is left with basically two life altering decisions. A player can decide to try to take their game to the next level, which of course is to make the jump from that of an amateur to that of a Professional. The 2nd life decision that presents itself is to take their schooling, and with it in hand, enter the workforce while leaving competitive hockey behind. Whatever a player decides is solely up to them, and the decision in the end is a life choice.
The reality is that thousands upon thousands of players are making career choices without exploring their options. In most cases, a lack of direction and know how are discouraging players from reaching their goals. For many players, interest from Professional teams will not be overwhelming and may even be non-existent. This lack of interest for many players is enough to dissuade a player from exploring the options that are available to them. You have OPTIONS!! It's your responsibility to explore them. Contact teams, enlist the help of your coach, hire an agent and get your name to the people that you want to have hear it. If in your heart of hearts you have the passion and desire to continue to play, make it happen. Get yourself noticed!
It's not our place to tell you what's right and what isn't with regards to your career. However, what we can and will tell you is that players who for whatever reason have been "forced" to give up the game prematurely, leave it with something missing. What's missing is having closure to all the unanswered questions that will arise. Could I have played at the next level? How would I have done? Where could have hockey taken me? For thousands of players, these questions sadly will never be answered. If you have questions that you need answered, answer them!
Once you leave the game at the competitive level, you've done just that. You've left it. This is not to say that playing hockey recreationally won't satisfy the void. The key is to leave the game when you're ready and not a second before. We've provided you with names and contacts, you have the names of agents and how to get in touch with one. Do with it what you want, but here's a wake up call. If you don't do it, the chances are no one will! Hockey, as a sport, is losing out on an abundance of unrealized talent. We plead with you to not be one of them until you're ready to be.
