Finding a quality agent is probably one of the most difficult tasks a player will be faced with. For the majority of players who haven't had an agent approach them, their agent will tend to be a brother, coach, fellow player, or someone they know. We're not saying that this is necessarily the wrong way to go about finding an agent. What we will say is that it limits your options. What you have to keep in mind is that whoever you find to represent you will be promoting you and doing so will be shaping your future. This article will give you some tips on finding and hiring agents. A quality agent can help you achieve your goals, and it is for that reason that you should be sure that your agent is someone you can trust.
When looking for an agent you are going to find a wide variety. Some will want to charge you before they have even talked to a team about you. This is neither credible nor acceptable. A quality agent won't charge you a dime until you're drawing a paycheck. When you get paid, they get paid.
Here are some things that you may want to know about a potential agent before hiring them. You have to remember, you are the boss, and your agent works for you.
  • What are there beliefs with regards to hockey?

  • How many players do they represent? Do they have time to represent you effectively?

  • How much do they charge? What percentage of your salary are they entitled to?

  • Have they seen you play? Will they make the effort to do so?

  • Do they share the same vision as you with regards to your career? Make sure you're both striving to get to the same place where ever that may be.

  • Do you like him/her? If this person is going to be representing you, promoting you, and in the long run, shaping your career, it's pretty important that you like and respect that person.

  • Do they keep promises? Do they call you when they say they will? Do they call you to talk, or do they only call when they're billing you?

How do you find a good agent? We know that it can be a tough task, so we've gone out and sourced a list of agents for your benefit. The following is a list of NHLPA Certified agents. We wish you luck in finding the right one!
