The hockey resume is probably one of the most misused tools that a hockey player has at his/her disposal. It's an effective way of promoting yourself to people that you want to see you. Some of us may not need a resume to get people to look at us, but most of us will. Be persistent, and let teams and people know that you are a motivated and interested player who wants to be found. Help them find you!! A hockey resume? What is it? Do I really need it? How do I make it? These are all questions that are important and have to be answered. Lets get started.
The hockey resume is a must if you hope to further your career beyond minor hockey. The purpose behind the resume is to let people know who you are, what you've accomplished, and whom they can contact to find out more about you. Its valuable at all levels, Jr. A, Major Jr., College, University, and it becomes a MUST when you want to pursue hockey as a professional.
If you are going to market yourself, you, the commodity, have to do it effectively. Here are some tips for creating an effective and impressive hockey resume:
  • Make Sure It's Accurate
Don't record information that is incorrect. There is nothing worse than getting caught in a lie! i.e. "had 25g's in 20 games in Jr. A" when in reality you only played 10gms and had 4g's"

  • Short & Sweet
Make sure the resume is informative, but don't get carried away. There is a fine line between information that others will find helpful and information that will have no bearing. i.e. "When I was 7, I scored 2 goals in the atom final." Make sure to use your discretion.

  • Have Good References
Make sure that the references you are using are going to be helpful. List people who are credible within the hockey world. i.e. Don't list your younger brother or your neighbor. Stick with past coaches and other hockey people.

  • Use It!!!
There is no point in having a hockey resume if you're not going to take full advantage of it. Send it out to the people who you want to see it. It's never to early to start for Jr. A, Major Jr., U.S. College, the CIS, all the way through to Professional. Get your name out there, and make them aware of who you are and how they can find you. You'd be surprised at how many of the teams will get back to you either on the phone or through a letter. If you want it bad enough, a quality hockey resume will help you get there.
