Contacting Teams

Contacting teams is an aspect of getting noticed that most players will overlook. Once again, we come to expect that the teams will contact us, and it is from the ones that do that we as players will then pursue. This happens daily in our sport and has become what many deem normal. However, this strategy is not in the player's best interest. It is reactive, rather than proactive. Wouldn't you agree that it makes more sense to make things happen than to wait for things to happen? As you grow older, you come to realize that anything worth having is worth expending the effort needed to achieve it. If you wait around and hope for things to happen, they will, but only those things left over by those who hustled.

Contacting teams doesn't take a ton of effort, and it really isn't that difficult to do. You simply have to do it! It's not something that players should be embarrassed to do, nor is it something that players should prolong in doing. For some, talent alone will be enough, but for others, it's going to take a little more. Go that extra mile that the majority of others aren't willing to go, and you will be amazed at what you may find.

The most important advice that we can give you is that it's never too early to start for Junior, University, and at the professional level, it's a must. You have the contacts and examples of cover letters and resumes. All you need to do is build your own and then get it into the hands of the people that you want to see it. By taking this initiative, people will start to take note of who you are and where you are, and it's these very same people that you one day hope to play for. The goal of self-promotion is to get noticed, and we encourage you to make it happen. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to Ask the Vet.
