U.S. Div. III is probably one of the most diverse leagues that you will find with respect to players' past history. What is exciting about the U.S. Division III program is that it can represent a stepping stone, finishing point, or starting point for many players.
Most of the players that you will find within the programs are talented players. You can expect to find many U.S. players arriving from prep schools, high school as well as Jr. A. Most of the Canadian players that you will find will be from Jr. B or Jr. A, most predominantly from Jr. A. Many of these players have the vision of finishing their careers at the school, while others are using the program to move on to the next level.
As with any player going into a competitive hockey program while attending school at the University/College level, there will be a period of adjustment. The school workload combined with juggling their playing schedule will be the biggest challenge. There is an abundance of talent within the Division III Program, but strengths of overall teams will vary from team to team as it would in any league.
Some players at this level may not be satisfied or accepting of where they're at. It is up to each player to come to terms with their situation or to work as hard as possible to change it. By change it, I mean that if the player wants to go Div I, work towards it. Make sure you're keeping the grades you need, and most important, make sure your coach is aware of your goals and is willing to help you. Your coach, regardless of where you're playing, can be your best ally or your worst enemy. Have the same plan and work together to execute it. This also applies to turning Pro as well. I stress to you to make your coach aware of your aspirations. After all, that's why you're playing isn't it?
Division III in the States is a great experience. The schools provide all the necessities that a player could want. However, athletic scholarships are not available at the Division III level. This is unfortunate but remains a fact of life. Many schools do have financial aid programs in place, yet the level available differs from school to school and student to student. Even still, for good hockey & good times, U.S. Div III is a place where it can be found.
