The American Hockey League (AHL) has emerged as the premiere developmental league of the NHL with the addition of six of the top teams from the recently disbanded IHL. The AHL is comprised of four divisions and will have a total of twenty-eight teams for the 2003-04 season. All of the teams within the AHL are affiliated with parent NHL clubs. The NHL uses the AHL as a developmental league for the majority of its draft picks. The American Hockey League is extremely competitive because all of its players are fighting daily for the chance to one day play at the NHL level.
