For most players coming out of competitive minor hockey, these three paths present themselves the most. These are the traditional career paths, and they are focused mainly on the decision to pursue an NCAA scholarship or not. These paths are by no means your only options. Most players, in fact, divert from these paths somewhere along the way. It is crucial to realize that if you find yourself on a different career path, it's o.k. to do so. There will be a time when hanging up the blades is the right option, but hitting an obstacle doesn't mean you have to!
As hockey players, we are conditioned into believing that our dream is our path. We work on the assumption that we will rise to the next logical level. We watch the draft and think "Yeah, that's me in a year or two". Or, when asked what's next, we say "I plan to go to school on scholarship." And, YOU CAN!! But, for many, these assumptions don't always pan out. The important thing to realize is that it is ok to take other routes. Your career doesn't have to take a traditional path. YOU have options that need exploring.
