The America West Hockey League (AWHL) is the youngest of the three Jr. A leagues within the United States. The league was established in 1993 and was previously known as the American Frontier Hockey League. Currently the AWHL has a total of ten teams. The leagues teams are founded primarily in the Rocky Mountain area.
For the 2002-03 seaon, the league plans a new southern division. Hockey South, as it will be known, will include Tupelo, along with Central Texas (TX), and Wichita Falls (TX). The AWHL is a feeder for college programs and offers players the opportunity to be seen by both college and professional scouts. Through its plans for controlled expansion and sponsorship development the AWHL's future looks to be bright.
