A couple of times in my career, I've been faced with injuries that required both rehab and significant amounts of recovery time. As hockey players and athletes, we are constantly being faced with injuries, but for the majority of my career, I was fortunate to have injuries that through simply icing or by giving them a short amount of time to rest, healed (or what I had perceived as being healed). With that said and two shoulder surgeries later, I realize now that I could have and should have dealt with my injuries in a better and more productive fashion.
When I look back I realize that I have not always done what was needed to avoid injury and or to minimize the injuries that I sustained. I often times neglected to follow through on the treatment that I needed to prevent further damage. I guess that part of it can be attributed to being young and nave, however the majority of it stems from being impatient. Lets face it, physio is neither exciting nor is it enjoyable, but as you grow older, you see it for what it is - a necessary evil.
Too many players' careers and overall health are affected for the worse, because at a young age, we don't pay attention to our bodies nor do we take care of them as we should. I am but one player of an endless list, and slowly throughout the duration of my career learned to view physio and rehab as a necessity versus an unattractive option.
We at PlayYourGame.com just wanted to remind and encourage players to pay attention to their bodies. It's the small but neglected injuries that often times can add up to a big one. Take your body seriously, and put in the effort to ensure that it is capable of allowing you to play the game you love for as long as you love to play it. Listen to your trainers and doctors. Listen to your body. By doing so, you may find this article to be the closest that you'll ever get to a serious injury. |
