Survivor Rebound

By Eric Fink
Head Coach
Twin Cities Northern Lights

Here's a game that mixes pop culture with hockey. Survivor Rebound is easy to play, fun, and great for after practices. And, it provides a chance for development at the same time. It's based on the combination of the classic game of Rebound with the television hit Survivor.

The Game:
  1. You'll need at least three players and a goalie (the more players the more enjoyable the game).
  2. Collect a bunch of pucks and place them slightly above the hash marks in front of the net.
  3. One player lines up to shoot from above the hash marks. The remaining players line up in two lines, on both sides of the shooter, forming a dinner table like shape with the goalie - with the shooters sitting at the heads of the table.
  4. The player at the hash marks shoots and tries to score. Any rebounds are up for grabs for any of the players. The goalie tries to make the save and cover up.
  5. Once a player shoots and the goalie covers up, the players rotate clockwise around the rectangle. (Note: If a player shoots and another teammate scores on a rebound, he continues to shoot.)
  6. Once every player has shot from the hash marks one time, the shooting players vote off one of their peers. Usually it's very informal and they skate in a circle by the goalie or a coach and whisper their vote as they pass by. The player with the most votes against has to leave.
  7. You continue in this fashion until only two players remain. These two players have a shootout to see who will be the champion.
The Rules:
  1. In addition to the goalie covering the puck, if the person shooting misses the net, or the rebound is cleared outside of the faceoff dots, the players rotate.
  2. Players are only allowed one pass per initial shot. Use it wisely!
  3. Immunity from being voted off can be gained by the shooting player scoring on three consecutive shots or if a rebounding player knocks in a rebound out of mid-air. (Both are very tough.)
  4. Players should be voted off...normally for missing the net, missing a wide open rebound, fanning on a shot, etc. However, it's never limited to these things. Sometimes the person with the most goals gets voted off.
  5. Add to these rules. The best way is to give more options for immunity. Be creative. Survivor Rebound was created to give goalies more work with rebounds. Sometimes in a regular game of Rebound, players will shoot for the corners too often and miss the net. By allowing players to vote them off, it forces them to shoot typically lower, and more for the five hole then the corners. This in turn creates more rebounds.
It's a great game that a lot of guys find very entertaining to play. Many times they won't even realize how hard they are actually working. Enjoy!!!
