Alcohol

The purpose of this article is to simply inform you of what alcohol will do to you as an athlete. Its not meant to give direction towards the answer of whether or not alcohol and the consumption of it is right or wrong. We at DavidSport feel that, as athletes, you need to be aware of the effects of alcohol and how they will affect your body, which in turn affects your performance.

For many of you, this article may be a bit premature because you are too young to be faced with the decisions of drinking. For Canada, the legal drinking age is 18 in Alberta and Quebec and 19 for the rest of the Country. In the U.S. the legal drinking age is 21. However, we at DavidSport realize that for whatever reason people are trying alcohol at a younger age. With that said, we feel that to make an educated decision one must have accurate information at their disposal.

Alcohol is a drug, and like many drugs, it is addictive. We know this addiction as alcoholism. Alcohol and athletics seem to go hand in hand; post-game parties, rookie parties, as well as other social gatherings. As an athlete, you need to be aware of the fact that alcohol often leads to late nights and results in non-regenerative sleep. In all sports, our bodies and minds are what allow us to perform at our best. When a player has been drinking the night before or even two nights prior, their energy level is affected. The reason why is that humans use sleep to allow for the regeneration of the body and the mind. When you've been drinking excessively, you deprive your body of the ability to regenerate and recuperate. Alcohol and its ingredients inhibit proper rejuvenation, which results in a player feeling tired, weak, and not mentally sharp. When an athlete feels this way, their athletic performance is generally affected for the worse.

Alcohol is a fact of life. We see our parents drinking. We see it on TV. And, we see our friends and teammates doing it. We're not here to tell you to never drink! What we're saying is to pick your spots, and know the consequences and how they affect your body. By being aware, you can make your choice, and after making your choice, you and you alone are left to deal with the results. The laws that govern the legal age of consumption have been set for a reason, and if and when you do begin to drink, we encourage you to do it responsibly and in moderation.
